The “Velhos Amigos” volunteering project, from the Leiria branch of Atlas-People Like Us, has been recognized by the Portuguese Confederation of Volunteers (CPV) with the Portuguese Volunteering Trophy.
The prize was awarded last Saturday, the 5th, during the celebration of the International Volunteer Day.
The 2020 Trophy was won in the “general” category by the team of volunteers of the “Velhos Amigos” project, a program that has been running in Leiria since 2013 and which aims to provide food, medical care and psychological support to people. elderly people living in isolation in the city.
In a statement, Atlas, a non-governmental development organization (NGDO), thanked the dedication of volunteers who “travel week after week in their own vehicles to deliver smiles, concerns and affections to the elderly.”

The projects that are part of the applications must meet three essential objectives, explains the CPV: promote volunteering as an exercise of active citizenship, solidarity and donation in the construction of the common good; promote volunteering which contributes to the improvement of living conditions in the communities; and disseminate good volunteering practices to improve their reproduction and / or the realization of new volunteering projects.
In addition to the volunteers of Leiria, also Lar de São Vicente, in Alcabideche, the Academic Association of the University of Minho and the Municipal Council of Amadora received the trophy.
