The historical identity of the 26 municipalities of Rede Cultura 2027, which prepares Leiria’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture, is gathered in the book “Portraits of a Territory”, published today.

The edition was presented at the mimo – Museu da Imagem em Movimento, in Leiria, and represents the effort of a team of 30 researchers from 26 municipalities.

In recent months, this team has prepared “a multifaceted portrait of this great territory”, explain the coordinators of the work, Acácio de Sousa and Maria Inácia Rezola.

“This book consists of small portraits and, not being a large-device work, it has a very precise and very relevant meaning” on “the most recent historical periods, called modern and contemporary period,” said today hui Acácio de Sousa.

“Portraits of a Territory” is addressed to events, people, artistic objects or economic activities, constituting “a document for the future”, summarized the historian Saul António Gomes.

“Anyone who wants to understand a little better what is the search for this identity of this territory that we have built and to which we belong has in this book a document of work and reflection. It is a book that will put the spotlight on the shelves of the libraries of our municipalities, our schools, but also of higher education schools and others ”, underlined the researcher, who coordinated the group dedicated to the Story at the Congress of Rede Cultura 2027, which resulted in a publication presented this Friday.

For the Vice-President of the Chamber of Leiria, this first edition of the city’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture is the “happy materialization” of Rede Cultura 2027, comparing it to “a mirror”.

“First of all, that’s what it is about: seeing ourselves in the mirror, but not a static mirror that gives us the image that we already know to be ours. It is a different mirror, which seeks to surpass itself, beyond us, beyond the object it reflects. It is a mirror that reflects not only what exists, but also the memory that each of us has of ourselves and of the other. It reflects who we are trying to be, more than who we are today and now, ”said Anabela Graça.

This edition appears as “a contribution to achieve what we want, which is to have a territory more triumphant and more victorious in its ambitions”, underlined Saul António Gomes “, namely” to be able to become the center of Europe in 2027, with a territory for the projection of culture and cultural construction ”, he concluded.
