The original staging imagined by Maina Gielgud for the classic “Swan Lake” is scheduled to premiere at the Teatro José Lúcio da Silva, in Leiria, on Sunday 20 December.
The interpretation is that of the students of the International Conservatory of Dance and Ballet Annarella Sanchez, who have worked hard in recent weeks with the English choreographer.
According to a statement from the Conservatory, Maina Gielgud was delighted by the attitude of the young dancers met in Leiria. “As she says, it is rare to see students as motivated as these, always available for rehearsals, open to criticism and ready to improve”, underlines the note released by the structure which prepares students for their professional career.
This is Maina Gielgud’s third work for the International Conservatory of Dance and Ballet, after the second act of “La Sylphide” in 2019 and “Giselle” in September this year.
Now the proposal is to present complete “Swan Lake”, “the most famous of all dances”, a very demanding challenge.

“The National Ballet Company itself, at the beginning, only danced the 2nd act”, recalls the information from the Conservatory, adding that the ballet “was never completely danced by any school in Portugal and, probably, not even by foreign schools ”.
The version prepared for the stage of the José Lúcio da Silva theater follows the original version of Petipa and Ivanov, with additional choreography by Maina Gielgud, which introduced some changes: in this version the ballet takes the form of a dream, in which Prince Siegfried he dreams that the queen mother and the chancellor do not approve of the love he feels for Odette and, on the contrary, they want him to marry Odille, the daughter of the chancellor.
The pair of protagonists will be played by Margarita Fernandes and António Casalinho, internationally awarded in competitions in recent years.
The capacity of the Teatro José Lúcio da Silva is already exhausted for this Sunday. The show starts at 4 p.m. and you can watch it online via livestage.ticketline.pt.https://thetrustedchronicle.com/
